Empty Vessels 2
Pine Cones

2020

Pine cones strewn on the forest floor in Catalonia are once again strewn, but this time on a concrete floor in the ultra-urban city of Singapore. Their presence in this unlikely surrounding ponders and probes the many constructs, the unwritten rules that govern life in today's cities.

Cypress seeds, Pine Cones, Wire

This work is made up of cypress seeds that came from trees in Catalonia, Spain. The cypress tree has a tall column like form and because of this it is believed by the local people to connect the earth to the heavens. Because of this symbolism this tree is often grown at the entrance of graveyards. The "seeds" in this work are now just empty casing. The actual seeds within have long been dispersed to the winds. Some perhaps lived out their destiny of sprouting into young trees while others would have fallen on barren ground and been lost to the dust. Much like the human bodies in the graveyard the cypress trees guard- vessels for the events of a lifetime. Are these events and activities we indulge in fertile or barren?

Contemplating how life itself comes into being- the miraculous potential of seeds and pods and of our own bodies to give rise to new life. And then the miraculous potential within all moments to germinate new narratives.
